I think it is his simplicities that complement Clarissa. She likes commotion in her way, as she loves parties and loves life being around her. To her, life is the presence of many people and chaos and things happening. But to Richard, life is Clarissa, and only her.

Mrs. Dalloway-- Richard
We began this discussion last week but the topic is furthered in the final reading. Richard, it seems, is a man who lives in the moment and enjoys what is happening around him as it happens. He takes great delight in the simple things in life because they are of great importance to him. He loves his wife. He wants to buy her flowers and tell her he loves her. All the happiness in the world is encompassed in this simple gesture. And his inability to say that he loves her does not seem like an act of cowardice to me, but rather, he was so overwhelmed by the moment that he was at a loss for words. That all he could do was hold out the flowers and trust that their relationship would speak for itself. He's a simple soul.

I also thought that readers can compare and contrast Richard and Clarissa's ways of living. Because Clarissa regrets or confused about decisions that she made in the past, however, Richard enjoys his present life.
