Anyhow, Septimus intrigues me in his desire to escape, to be free, and his mentions of death. Married, to Rezia, in the first section we read he gets completely lost in his own world and states he is "interrupted" by her when she calls him back to reality (pg. 23-25). Then on page 67 he rejoices in his marriage being over because his wife's finger is too thin for her wedding ring. An odd way to end a marriage, but to each their own. Septimus is a character who seems to be in a constant pursuit of escape so he can be alone. As though he wishes to be free from the people of the world.
He also has a bit of an obsession with beauty-- upon seeing the plane, he began to cry over how beautiful it was. On pg 69, he is marveling over nature's beauty. And then he makes the reference to heaven on page 68 where he says "heaven was divinely merciful, infinitely benignant. It spared him, pardoned his weakness" that got me wondering, is heaven the only place where he can truly be alone and not judged by anyone but a god?
