Mrs. Dalloway Wrap Up

Pg. 184, “what business had the Bradshaws to talk of death at her party?” This talk upsets Mrs. Dalloway, and she starts to once more think of death. Septimus Smith had committed suicide by throwing himself out of a window, and he landing on steeple fencing below. Climatic novel paragraph that states how Clarissa feels, “This man threw away his life, she once threw a shilling into the Serpentine, never anything more.” Death in the novel was defiance. It was a way to communicate how the characters were feeling, and the way people ignored their feelings, and needs.  For example, the doctor ignores Septimus’ PTSD, and severe depression, which leads to him killing himself.  In a way Septimus dies for Clarissa, and she dies platonically.
