"The Country of the Pointed Firs"- isolation

One theme that tends to work its way through the short story is isolation. The story does not have a consistent flow to it and the stories kind of appear all over the place but the one commonality that occurs in every story is isolation. Starting with the narrators escape to the schoolhouse to write, and working its way to the stories of Mrs. Blackett and Joanna. The story also focuses on the small islands of Shell-heap island which is 8 miles from Dunnet Landing and Green island which is five miles from mainland. Another story of isolation appeared when Elijah was talking to the narrator about his deceased wife. Elijah describes his wife passing that occurred eight years ago and the qualities of his wife. The final instance of isolation occurs at the end with the narrator. Mrs. Todd leaves her to go inquire Miss Edward Caplin on her last day on Dunnet Landing. The narrator stands alone in the house as she sees this chapter of her life coming to an end.
