Stevenson- The Bunner Sisters

One thing that really struck me about these first four chapters was the jealously that Ann Eliza had for her sister Evelina. Ann Eliza was particularly interested in Mr. Ramy, the gentleman who sold her the clock for her sister. When the clock starts ticking Ann Eliza plans on taking it to Mr. Ramy to get it repaired however, Miss Mellin's was taken again and needed to be cared for. While Ann Eliza was caring for Miss Mellin's, Evelina went ahead to Mr. Ramy's shop. Mr. Ramy ends up fixing the clock and comes to check on the clock at the Bunner sisters house about a week later. Ann Eliza, and Evelina both seem to have some sort of feelings for Mr. Ramy and they are both trying to make a good impression on him. The following week Mr. Ramy comes to visit the Bunner sisters again. During this visit Miss Mellin's was visiting as well. During Miss Mellin's conversation with Ann Eliza, Miss Mellin says, "I'd no idea your sister was keeping company. On'y to think!" Ann Eliza turned and said, "oh, you're mistaken, Miss Mellins. We don't har'ly know Mr. Ramy". The quote above suggests Ann Eliza disbelieve in Mr. Ramy and Evelina forming a relationship. "We don't har'ly know" suggest that Ann Eliza is trying to force herself to believe that there is nothing there because of there newly formed relationship with Mr. Ramy. Ann Eliza became very envious of the emotions that Mr. Ramy shared for Evelina and not for herself. Ann Eliza wanted to know what it was like to be in love she found it unfair that her sister was able charm Mr. Ramy into continue to visit.
