The Street and Vera Drake
One quote that tied the two together was when Reg said "if you can't feed them you can't love them" referring to his mother raising him and his six brothers and sisters. This immediately made me think of the conversation we had about The Street in class. In a perfect world all mothers would be able to be there for their children and give them all the love and attention they need, but if they don't have the basic necessities needed for life this isn't always possible. Vera Drake made it very apparent that most of these women were clearly unable to raise a child and their decisions were not selfish, but rather selfless because they would like to be able to do so.

I definitely think us reading The Street before Vera Drake was very well ordered. The Street front loaded us and prepared us into being a mother without the proper resources. If these women did not want children, their child's life wouldn't be to all they deserve. Its really hard to say these women were being selfish. I agree what they were doing was selfless, for the good of an innocent baby. Vera was doing a selfless act as well. Why would she perform these acts without the girls best interest in hand? I really look forward to our classroom discussion today.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you're statement. If a mother will not be able to provide the kind of life for a child that is worth living then abortion may be a feasible intelligent option to look into. Many people bring children into this world into abusive situations with boyfriends, and family members, or into homes where the family already have too many children that they cannot even feed. Some people do get abortions for perhaps selfish and not moral reasons, but if someone even thinks that they don't want a child, why would we want to have a child born of these parents? Everyone deserves love.
