The Super's Role

In class last Wednesday, we talked a lot about Naturalism and how it relates to The Street. I found this incredibly helpful! What left me thinking the most was the thoughts on the natural vs. supernatural. We discussed how the Super is a natural being within society. However, he gives off a perverted and unlikable vibe. "She could feel his eyes traveling over her-estimating her, summing her up, wondering about her" (page 13). He is also described in close to correspondence to his dog. This makes him animalistic and the natural is almost not desired. "The Super was standing in the middle of the living room. Waiting for her" (page 14). What do you think the author's intention of including the Super are? Do they go long beyond describing this creepy guy? After our class discussion on naturalism I found quotes with the words natural and unnatural in them. "I cleared my throat" the Super said. His voice had a choked, unnatural sound as though something had gone wrong with his breathing" (page 17). Is this the author suggesting unnatural as an adjective for unlawful or strange? Should things always be natural? In chapters 4-6, the Super continues his oddities and I think his behavior should be well looked at.
