Vera Drake - Meagan Niles

I think that this movie highlighted the fact that abortions are such a controversial topic. On one side is Vera, a caring woman who is always singing to herself and views her job as “helping girls that are in trouble.” On the other side is the court system where abortions are illegal. There was even some difference of opinion in Vera’s own family. While her husband and daughter seemed to support her the best they could, Vera’s son wanted nothing to do with her and questioned how she could "kill little babies." At first, it was hard for me to relate to Vera because I am pro-life. At the same time, I understood that this movie was trying to display some varying situations/opinions. For some of the women, this might have been their only option at this time in history. One example of this was Susan, a rape victim who would have rather killed herself than have the baby. A very different case was the woman who was drinking martinis with her friend as she prepared for the abortion. Although we don’t see the exact motive behind this abortion, the client did not seem to take her baby’s life seriously at all.
