The Street

Jones is definitely the most interesting part of The Street. He's undeniably creepy, but Petry also adds a sympathetic note to his character, which, if possible, makes it even more unnerving when reading from his point of view. This guy literally doesn't know how threatening he is, how twisted the train of his thoughts is. The thing that makes it so strange is that he isn't motivated by lust, or solely by lust. Instead, it is loneliness, which is part of what makes him sympathetic. Every mention of this feeling he has makes him stranger and stranger, and more and more interesting. There were times during Chapter Four when I wondered if he was driven by lust at all and not just some horribly warped desire for human closeness--not necessarily sex.
