This is a dedicated discussion space for Professor Renzi's ENG 353 course during Spring 2012. We will blog as a way to practice analytical reading and writing, as well as to continue our discussions this semester beyond the confines of our class meetings.

Vera Drake
Wow, what an unbelievable movie. I found Imelda Staunton's performance to be so moving and I loved her at every moment during the film. One of the most striking scenes for me was when the young girl who was raped was trying to get an abortion and she had to jump through all these hoops to get one. She had to admit that she would kill herself just to get clearance for an abortion. Not only is this significant because of the fact that there are threats looming currently that women will have to undergo psychiatric and intensely invasive physical evaluations in order to obtain an abortion, but also because of how ineffective these measures may be. Anyone could claim they were suicidal because of their pregnancy, but the fact that they would have to do it is ridiculous.
