Lady Tal-Naja Tatum
In this short story, we are introduced to a woman named Atalanta or Lady Tal. She is described as a harsh women who doesn't show too much emotion even when faced in situations that are detrimental and emotional. One thing about the story that caught my attention the most is that how the other characters in the story describe Lady Tal as not your ordinary women a "strange creature" reading this, I thought Lady Tal must be a new woman with no questions asked, but once the story revealed that Lady Tal is controlled by a will from her late husband that denies her the right to marry again, this made me question if Lady Tal would still be considered a new woman. What is everyone's thoughts on this?

It was kind of hard for me to distinguish as well whether I thought her to be a new woman or just kind of eccentric. It didn't really seem like she had the strong desire to marry again anyway, so perhaps it wasn't just her dead husband's will that was binding her. On the other hand she says at least a couple times throughout the story that she tries to conform; this makes me skeptical of her status as a new woman.
ReplyDeleteI questioned her possible title of a new woman also, but I do not think she should be considered one for the fact that she is still being controlled by a man even though he had already past. She has the ability to make her own decision with whether she wants to remarry or keep the will, but there seems to be too much restriction on her for her to remarry. I feel like the new woman would do what she truly wanted. In Lady Tal's case it is hard for me to distinguish whether she wants to remarry or not, but if she did then the new woman would do so without hesitation and start her new life without ties to her old life.
