A New England Nun

Louisa Ellis didn't really strike me as a "new woman" the way some of the other characters we've read about did. It seemed like she was really devoted to Joe and sort of fell into a life of independence. It was as if, in the process of waiting for him, she grew accustomed to living a life for herself rather than for a man. However, instead of marrying him like she felt she should, when she saw an opportunity to get out of it, she took it. The only thing I wonder is whether or not she would have backed out of the marriage if she had not overheard that conversation between Joe and Lily. I honestly cannot tell.

  1. i think she definitely is a new women. before anything unfolded i think she knew that on her own was the only way she could be happy. that characteristic alone is enough to show a change.
