The Awakening Pt. 2- Leah Short
Upon finishing this story, I felt pained for Edna and her confusion with passion which seemed to be uncontrollable. It was either she longed for one thing, or she was completely empty or numb to the world around her. The story continuously would describe the beauty of the water and the scenery which encompassed it, amounting the water and the beach as a place where Edna found herself whole and fulfilled. In a way it reminded me of The Yellow Wallpaper, where a woman was driven mad from the aesthetics of a seemingly meaningless part of life (wallpaper). Edna found feelings of true love for Robert, but convinced herself or truly believed (not sure which one) that it would disappear or become meaningless like the rest of her passions seemed to function. Love was temporary for Edna, and she internalized this thought, which lead her to her suicide and hopelessness in life. Edna's disbelief in love lead her to her demise.

I too thought about the way the water kind of drove Edna mad like the yellow wallpaper in the bedroom. Edna's obsession with the water and then with the way she talked herself out of love with Robert was strange to me. She could've had a meaningful life but instead became hopeless which led to her killing herself.
