The Yellow Wallpaper- Leah Short

After our discussion in class about the "new woman" I feel that the narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" is one who wishes so direly to become this type of "new woman" but is restrained from doing so by her husband and illness. She portrays her desire to become a "new woman" by rebelling and writing down her thoughts which convey a message of confusion and unease with her life. She is burdened with an illness and is kept in a room by her husband. Her writing shows her true thoughts, which are that of a "new woman." She questions her peers and asserts her thoughts as something of importance by putting them down on paper, which is something a "new woman" would believe in doing. Her obsession with the wallpaper and the woman in the wallpaper also shows her to have a desire to be the "new woman" and to wish for more in her life.
