The Yellow Wallpaper - Amanda Fulco
In "The Yellow Wallpaper," the narrator claims that the woman in the wallpaper gets out in the daytime. This is similar to the narrator because like the woman, she doesn't have to creep around during the daytime when her husband, John, is away. She is trying to escape the barriers that John has built around her. She has found a way to escape by writing her thoughts down, however she can only write when John is not around. The narrator feels trapped within her marriage because John treats her as if she were a child. After she sees that the woman in the wallpaper gets out in the daytime, she realizes that she doesn't want to hide the new woman that she is becoming anymore. Like the woman in the wallpaper, the narrator wants to be freed of the domestic role that society has created for her.

I like the connection you made about the narrator not having to creep about in the daytime when John is away, with the woman behind the wallpaper. I also think it's interesting how it ends, that she keeps walking about the room even when her husband faints and continues on, stepping right over him. Perhaps it signifies the future of the New Woman, who will keep going on, stepping over those who don't believe in the New Woman.

ReplyDeleteYou make a great point! I really like the connection you made with her creeping by stepping over her husband and how this could signify the future of the New Woman. I never thought of it in this way because even when her husband sees her, she doesn't stop. It's almost as if she is finally free and nothing can take that away from her.
