The Yellow Wallpaper - Me Young Hong
This story, “The Yellow Wallpaper” focuses on a “New” woman who pursues to write words on a book. She tends not to express her thoughts in real life but expresses it in the text. She loves to write words and describe her feeling only on the book although her husband hates it, “There comes John, and I must put this away, - he hates me write a word.” (p. 101, Gilman) This may be the representation of the New Woman; women starts to do something that they really wanted to do. Also, she may relate her feeling and thoughts with the yellow wallpaper and a woman. She was, somehow, forced to stay in the room because of her husband and she pushes herself to get used to be in the room. She might do things that her husband would want her to do, stay in the room and rest, and also do things that she really wanted to do, write a story. The New Woman starts to have rights and express her existence.

ReplyDeleteI agree with the idea of the narrator writing to express herself without her husband knowing. She uses her journal entries to express herself because she cannot say her feelings out loud. She obeys her husband while she writes at the same time without his approval. Do you believe that the narrator was becoming the "new" woman before she started writing? Or do you think that by writing to express herself she discovered the "new" woman inside of her. Great post and I really like the ideas that you supported.
