In the short story "The Yellow Wallpaper," the idea of motherhood is a theme that is only mentioned a few times, but left me with many questions.  During class discussion, we talked about how the New Woman opted out of having children because they would hold her back from reaching her goals.  However, in the story, the narrator has a child, but is very rarely mentioned.  However, there is one instance where she mentions having a child and actually shows that she cares for it because she mentions that she is glad that the baby does not have to stay in the room with the yellow wallpaper.  I was unsure whether she actually cared for her child, or was just feigning interest in her child because that is what she felt was expected of her at that time.
