The Yellow Wallpaper- Alison Alessi

After a couple of readings of The Yellow Wallpaper, I became interested in when the lady behind the paper was free to crawl about outside the wall. During the day time, the main character says that she can see the woman out in the garden just creeping about. She even goes on to say that it is during the night that the woman can be seen pounding on the bars of her yellow prison. I began to wonder what significance this had to what was going on with the main character's mental state. The only real difference between night and day for the main character is that her husband is home. During the day, he is often gone, out of the house for work. When he comes home at night and sleeps next to his wife, it is then that she lies awake and sees the woman in the paper struggling to get out. When looked at this way, the yellow wall paper itself becomes in itself, a representation of the main character's husband. He imprisons his wife like the paper imprisons the creeping woman. This makes me wonder about how she broke through in the end. It was during the day, which is usually when the creeping woman is free to creep around the gardens, so why did she have to rip down the paper to creep freely if it was already day? Her husband is home at that point for whatever reason. That could have something to do with it. The wallpaper prison acclimates itself to the schedule of the husband.
