The County of the Pointed Firs

The narrator of this story is a very strong and independent woman. She travels by herself and writes for herself, something I'm not sure that many women of the time did. But I also found it interesting that her strongest relationship is with another woman, Mrs. Todd, and she apparently has no interest with forming a bond with anyone else, especially not with a man. When Captain Littlepage comes to speak to her, to tell her stories, she responds with obvious and rude boredom. She compares the entire encounter with previous time spent with Mrs. Todd. She has no desire to bond with this man and wishes only to continue her writing, observe her surroundings and spend more time with her best friend. This is a fiercely independent woman and she makes me think of the New Woman a great deal.
